In 2017 dry eye was redefined as “a multifactorial disease of the ocular surface…” Dry eye is a disease that afflicts over 30 million people in the United States alone. We know that dry eye is more than just an inconvenience; it’s burning eyes, redness, watering, pain, blurry vision, contact lens intolerance, a disease that can effect your quality of life. We saw these symptoms in many of our patients, but unfortunately it’s nearly impossible to address the complexity that is dry eye during a routine examination. Thus, the Dry Eye Center at Optique was born.
If you suffer from Dry Eye Disease you have probably tried multiple over the counter remedies, some may even have been recommended by your Doctor. There’s a reason these remedies only provide short term relief; they aren’t addressing the underlying problem. At the Dry Eye Center at Optique we spend quality time with you discussing your symptoms, thoroughly evaluating your tears and ocular surface, and developing a plan to help you achieve long term relief from your dry eye symptoms.
We will evaluate your eyes for a number of conditions that result in Dry Eye Disease. Some of those conditions we test for are:
- Inflammatory markers in your tear film
- Meibomian gland dysfunction and gland atrophy
- Demodex infestation
- Presence of eyelid biofilm (plaque)
- Aqueous deficiency
- Proper blink response
- Effects of screen time on the tear film
- Effects of systemic conditions and medications on the tear film
Once we have a clear picture of what is causing your Dry Eye Disease we develop a treatment plan. That plan will likely include a combination of in-office and home treatments designed to compliment one another. We pride ourselves on using the most relevant evidence based medicine to develop these plans and help our patients find relief from their dry eye symptoms.
If you suffer from Dry Eye Disease and have yet to find a treatment plan that works for you, please, come see us. We are so happy to provide this much needed service to our Nashville community.
